POLICING AND PROSECUTING CASES IN POST FERGUSON WORLD

The job of policing and prosecuting cases in the post-Ferguson environment has become more challenging than ever. Police professionals have taken a hard look at the mistakes and successes of communities around the country when dealing with police involved shootings and civil unrest. The result of these examinations include making sure we are connected to the community we serve, understanding our capabilities and inabilities, and being nimble enough to adjust to a quickly changing environment.

The President’s Report on 21st Century Policing final report was released in May of 2015, and provided recommendations on meaningful solutions to help law enforcement agencies and communities strengthen trust and collaboration, while ushering the nation into the next phase of community-focused policing. This report includes six pillars: Building Trust and Legitimacy, Policy and Oversight, Technology and Social Media, Community Policing and Crime Reduction, Training and Education, and Officer Wellness and Safety. It is important for prosecutors to understand these national recommendations, particularly those likely to impact the collaboration of police and prosecutors.
