Victims of Residential Burglaries |
Only about 15% of all burglaries committed in Lexington, Kentucky ever get solved. As a victim of burglary, it is very frustrating for the victims to know that there is a possibility that the burglary could go unsolved and the loss of their valuables and sense of security will never be returned. The victim often wonders what they could have done to better protect their home. A victims' advocate contacts each victim by phone and letter to encourage the victims to protect themselves from any future burglary. The advocate picks up the burglary reports daily from the police department. The advocate then sends a letter to each victim informing him/her of a Home Security Survey and the Safety Watch Neighborhood Program that the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Division of Police offers. A Home Security Survey is a free service where an officer goes to the victim's home, checks doors, windows and locks, and recommends inexpensive and easier ways to better secure a home. The Safety Watch Program is designed to promote neighborhood safety. Neighbors can work together to help reduce criminal activity within their neighborhood. The Division of Police will help organize the group and will act as a liaison between the group and the police. The advocate also contacts each victim by phone to see if they are interested in any of the programs offered by the Police Department. |
